By Becky Black According to the History of Clinton County, as told by Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Taylor and Alta Shannon Martin*, Mecca was a small town established in 1899. A settlement on the Quincy, Omaha and Kansas City Railroad (QO&KC) in the southwest portion of Clinton County, today some remnants of Mecca can be found off O Hwy. east of Grayson. (*Alta was the mother of Plattsburg resident Madelyn Everett and was a well-known area poet and writer.)

Last Mule era landmark destroyed by fire in 1957
8/27/2009
By Brett Adkison The history of Lathrop and its unique connection with the mule has been well chronicled. Fueled by the Guyton & Harrington Company, which supplied mules and horses to the British army during the Boer War and World War I, the town was deemed the “Mule Capitol of the World” during the early 20th century. As the automobile became prominent in both war and everyday living, the market for the mule slowly died down. Despite this, the town still maintains that it is the “Former Mule Capitol of the World” and the local school district even adopted the animal as its mascot.

Remembering Plattsburg
8/27/2009
Submitted by Gertrude Barnett I've been thinking about how Plattsburg was when we moved here in 1947. Gassman's Pharmacy was across the street from the courthouse where JJs is now. He had a display case that kept mixed nuts warm. You could get regular or deluxe (no peanuts). During the summer, in season, you could get a fresh peach ice cream cone.

Remembering Plattsburg... The Telephone Office
4/17/2009
By Helen Russell Today we pay our telephone bills to a company called CenturyTel located in Carol Stream, IL, but there was a time when the main office of our telephone supplier was right here in Plattsburg located on Main Street. It went by several different names through the years, starting out as General Telephone Services, General Telephone Company and Middle States Utilities Company before changing to CenturyTel.
