A ‘Sunshine Hero’ is remembered

By the time this month’s column hits mailboxes, a full month will have passed since Tom Schweich’s death. Last month’s magazine containing his photo from Missouri Press’ Day at the Capital arrived on my desk the day of his funeral.

Those of us who witnessed the Opening Day Ceremonies, when the KC Royals celebrated their 2014 American League Championship, had to notice the strong bond between the players, coaches, owners, management, staff and the fans. It was something wonderful to behold.

The Right Angle: Dirty Politics
Updated: March 26, 2015 - 11:46 pm

The recent suicide ??? of State Auditor Tom Schweik was shocking and very much a surprise. He had just set up a meeting with the media to be interviewed only a few hours hence. It seemed incongruous that a married man with two children could be goaded and coerced into the taking of his own life simply for being called Jewish! There were several personal attacks that attacked his qualifications to be our governor, but rumors and smears and “whispering campaigns” should not convince a seasoned politician to commit suicide. I think there is much more to this tragic story.
