Mrs. Lois Harrison, Kansas City Metropolitan Area Extension Home Economist was the featured speaker at the annual Extension Homemakers Achievement Day held October 5, 1970.

Mrs. Harrison who is well known locally through her Kansas City radio program “Let’s Go to Market,” reported on a food and nutrition study tour of five European countries. Primary emphasis was on the food markets, food service facilities and agricultural industry in Madrid, Spain.

Another highlight of the day was the club exhibits in keeping with the theme of “International Foods and Nutrition”. Recipes and delicious samples of foreign foods were sold by the clubs. The money will be used to help finance projects of the county Extension Homemakers Council in 1971.

Installation of the 1971 council officers completed the day’s activities. Mrs. Joe Daniels, 1970 Council Parliamentarian, presented a rose to each officer as she charged them with ten duties of office.

BEAVERS JOLT HOLT…The Beaver Club entered their popular float in the Cannonball Festival parade in Holt last Saturday. Those representing this infamous club were “Tightwad” Holloway and his (much younger than him) wife plus “Bemo” Hawkins, Gower’s Largest Water Hauler.

The float was a truck bed full of empty chairs with a sign stating “Members of the Beaver Club who support Tom Coleman.”

Beavers Jolt Holt
The Gower Beaver Club sent a delegation to the Holt, Mo. Cannonball Parade last Saturday, along with their supporters of Tom Coleman float.

The folks of Holt sure stared at the Beaver’s, but come to think about it, they stared at the Beaver’s in Gower, too. One lady, a bouncing Betty Botts, gave the Beaver’s a stare that the Beaver’s considered on the flirtatious side. But, the Beaver’s resisted the inborn animal instinct to hug her. The Beaver’s were a little miffed at Bouncing Betty for lining up the Beaver’s behind the horses in the parade. It gave the spectators an ample supply of horse apple missiles to throw at the Beaver’s.

Holt is located on the Clinton-Clay County line. The parade formed in Clinton County, but as it moved south into Clay County the Beaver’s began to loosen up and throw candy and gum to the spectators. Again they escaped the clutches of Clinton County’s Prosecutor, the Honorable W. Mitchell Elliott.

The Beaver’s want to thank the nice people of Holt for inviting them over and hope you enjoyed the parade as much as they did!!!

Beavers Meet in Executive Session

The Beaver’s met in executive session last Sunday to discuss the up-coming congressional election. The Beaver’s read the sample ballot in their favorite paper, the Buchanan County Farmer, and come to the conclusion that it was a carbon copy of ‘88 ballot...Same old names, same old offices!!! Tom Coleman again is sacrificing his earning potential by running for an office that pays only 124 thousand dollars a year, plus many perks!?! Poor Uncle Tom missed a good chance to go on a fact finding trip to Barbados with fellow congressmen and lobbyists. If his special interest groups would have paid cash instead of by check, Uncle Tom would have been on the plane rather than at his favorite bank cashing his check. It seems that Poor Tom’s personal checking account is always overdrawn because he keeps thinking he’s still spending your money. Deficit spending is a way of life for Tom and his congressional colleagues. Let’s give Tom a wake-up call on Tuesday, November 6th that will jar him out of bed with the lobbyists. We sent Tom to Washington, now we can’t seem to get him out. President Bush said the “Democrats made me do it” (raise taxes). When the T.V. Evangelists like Jimmy Swaggart and Jim Bakker strayed from the straight and narrow and got caught with their pants down, they say “The devil made them do it”. Clinton County Conservative, right-winger, David J. Holloway wryly commented that he could never differentiate between the devil and the democrats. That bungling bunch in Washington known as Congress has had since 1958 to balance the budget...which was the last time it was balanced. President Bush stated that anyone out there could have written a better budget bill!!! So, why are we paying those clowns in Congress to do what anyone of us could have done??

The Beaver’s didn’t commit themselves to W. Mitchell Elliott’s candidacy for Clinton County Prosecutor, but it went on record to unanimously support Bob McClure, Mercer County Farmer for 6th District Representative. The Beaver’s feel that Bob McClure brings to the race impeccable qualifications...No PAC money...no law degree!!!
