Groups Battle Litter at Smithville Lake

On the morning of Sept. 8 hundreds of thousands of people converged on our Federal Park lands. They didn't come to fish, hike, boat, or swim. They came to battle litter. At Smithville Lake, 243 volunteers came from 18 different groups turned out for the half-day event. This is the third year for Smithville Lake to participate in this nation-wide cleanup held on the Saturday after Labor Day. Cleanup Day volunteers came from the surrounding communities and included the following groups: Girl Scout Troop #131; Cub Scout Packs #168, #309, #66, #287, #247, #273, #288, #477, #330, #376, #272, #289; Boy Scout Troops #222, #412, #247, #66; and the National Campers and Hikers-Itcheefuts.

They removed litter that had been left by thoughtless visitors, increased the public awareness of the litter problem, and showed great support from their park - Smithville Lake!

The morning cleanup activities worked up quite an appetite but the Smithville Kiwanis Club was well prepared with a hearty picnic lunch served, secured by generous donations from the following businesses: Guys Foods, Circle  One Stop, Sunshine Biscuits Inc., Marina International, Interstate Brands, Farmland Foods, McDonalds Corp., Clydes Paradise General Store, and John's Super.

Shatto Milk – Best in the world

Clinton County residents have always known that Shatto Milk of Osborn, Mo. has a tremendous product. Now the rest of dairy world knows, as well.

The Shatto Milk Company received awards for three of their products during the World Dairy Exposition recently held in Madison, Wisconsin. Shatto Root Beer Milk took first in the world in the Open Class category, followed by a second place showing in the same class by Shatto Strawberry Milk. Shatto's 2% Milk was named second in the world in the White Milk category.

“We are thrilled by this wonderful news,” said Barb Shatto, owner of Shatto Milk. “It's amazing to think that the milk from our small family dairy farm has been recognized as some of the best in the entire world. We are humbled by these results and are so excited that we can offer our customers such a variety of fresh and yummy products.”

Shatto may have brought home another award had it not been for a mishap with the delivery of another product.

“Last year we actually were one of the top-three with chocolate milk,” said Leroy Shatto, owner/operator of Shatto Milk. “We sent chocolate milk up this time and it didn't make it there. We haven't heard why. If our chocolate milk had made it there, I think we may have even had another award.”

The awards mark an amazing milestone for a local business that has come a long way since first delivering their product fresh in June 2003.

“We used to just milk cows and no one ever told us that our milk tasted good because they didn't know where it went to,” said Leroy Shatto. “Now, when we bottle our own milk and take it to town, people tell us how much they like it. Then you win world awards. It makes you feel like you’re doing something right.

“It's always good to win awards, but just having everyone tell us that they like it means so much.”

For more information on the award-winning company, you can visit them online at www.shattomilkecompany.com or visit their country store at 9406 N. Highway 33, Osborn, Mo.
