Plattsburg services canceled, Lathrop and Gower still on

With the COVID-19 pandemic still lingering, Memorial Day services are sure to be different in 2020  Clinton County.
Plattsburg’s annual Memorial Day services have been canceled this year because of the pandemic. In Gower, the memorial will once again be held at the Gower Veterans Memorial with both drive-in parking and space in the park made available for spectators to socially distance. There will be no lunch served this year. Lathrop’s Memorial Day services will continue as scheduled.

The Plattsburg American Legion Post 97, along with its auxiliary, and VFW Post 4428, have announced that the services and luncheon scheduled for Monday have been canceled.

“We believe this follows the intent of the Clinton County Health Department’s guidance on group gatherings,” the posts said in a release.

In the release, the posts wrote that this marks the 75th year since the end of World War II, and despite the cancelation, this is still the ideal time to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

“Today, of all days, we are faced with the COVID-19 enemy,” the release reads. “We can reflect on what ittruly means to have and live in freedom. We need to reaffirm our commitment to our nation and to our military service members and their mission. We owe a significant debt of gratitude to our veterans, past and present, for their sacrifices in the defense of our liberty and we must make sure that their service to this nation is always honored.”

The Gower Memorial Day ceremonies will take place Monday, May 25, at noon at the Veterans Memorial at City Park. There will be parking available to view the ceremony. Parking will open at 11 a.m. and those in their cars can tune in to 100.5 FM.

Those who would rather be outside to view the event can do so and are urged to bring their lawn chairs. There is plenty of room in the park for social distancing. There will be no lunch served this year.

Lathrop American Legion Kirby Stapleton Post 467 will continue with its Memorial Day services next Monday beginning at 11 a.m. at Lathrop Cemetery. The post will also be holding one of its barbecue sales this Saturday morning beginning shortly after 9 a.m. on Oak Street in front of the post. All proceeds go to the post.
